Fun Rainbow Facts For Kids
Did you know that rainbows are formed by light and water? When light shines through water during rain or a waterfall the light bends to create an arc of colors. It can also happen in mist, fog, sea spray, and anything else that creates a mist of water.
The word rainbow actually comes from the Latin words “arcus pluvius”, which means “rainy arc”
It wasn’t until around 1637 when it was discovered by René Descartes that rainbows were caused by light from the sun being split by water in the rain into different colors.
Rainbows split light into seven colors. These are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet.
China still considers rainbows to have just 5 colors.
But technically there are no set amount of definite colors in a rainbow, as each color blends into the other, meaning that there are so many different shades of the main colors.
Rainbows are different for everyone. Depending on your perspective, you’ll see a rainbow in a different place than others nearby. They also cannot be touched, as when you move the rainbow moves too, as the angle of light changes to your perspective.
We perceive rainbows as being an arc, starting from the ground and going towards the sky or back to the ground to form an arc. But that’s because only part of the rainbow is visible from your perspective. If you were to see a rainbow from the sky while on an airplane, you’re much more likely to see a full circle, showing that rainbows are endless.
In our solar system, our planet is the only planet that is able to see rainbows, as other planets lack water precipitation which is needed along with direct sunlight to be able to create rainbows.
